Gate Gourmet
Gate Gourmet is the flagship airline-catering brand of gategroup, a Swiss food-and-hospitality group headquartered in Glattbrugg/Zurich. Founded out of Swissair catering (roots to 1931; spun off as Gate Gourmet in 1992), it is the world's largest airline caterer, operating ~200 flight kitchens/units across 60+ countries and serving ~520-680 million passengers annually; gategourmet alone employs ~40,000 of the group's ~45,000 staff. gategroup reported 2024 revenue of CHF 5.2 billion (EBITDA CHF 391M), with the US its largest market. Operations split into Aviation Services (airline catering, onboard retail via gateretail, lounges via uqonic) and Food Solutions (packaged/rail/event meals, plus deSter food packaging). Core work is high-volume, time-critical assembly of compartmentalized meal trays and provisioning of carts under strict food-safety and aviation-security regimes. The company is owned 50/50 by Temasek and RRJ Capital and runs an active innovation program (gatehorizon, gateOpex 2.0) that is now piloting robotics and AI vision in meal-tray assembly.
Recommended pilots
Most landable: low-variability packaged items, high failure tolerance, soft_body works_in_demos — ideal safe first pilot in a tier-1 quick-win vertical.
Strongest demand and high tactile value; soft-body compliance demonstrable but fresh-food variability and food-safety push it one notch beyond solid. Worth piloting alongside the kit wedge.
