Hearthside Food Solutions
Hearthside Food Solutions (rebranded Maker's Pride LLC after emerging from Chapter 11 in spring 2025) is North America's largest contract food manufacturer and largest private bakery, producing snack/nutrition bars, cookies, crackers, wafers, enrobed snacks, fresh/refrigerated and frozen foods (sandwiches, burritos, bowls, entrees) anonymously for major CPG brands such as General Mills, Kellogg, Kraft Heinz, PepsiCo and Mondelez. Founded in 2009 by Rich Scalise via private-equity-backed roll-up acquisitions, it scaled to roughly 27-30 production facilities and ~10,000-12,000 employees producing on the order of 1.7-3.7 billion pounds of food annually, with revenue historically in the $3-4 billion range. The business model is high-volume, high-mix co-manufacturing with frequent packaging changeovers; it is currently PE-owned (post-restructuring lenders including Apollo and Oaktree) and is rationalizing its network (two plant closures announced March 2026) while citing modernization with advanced automation.
Recommended pilots
Pure Phase-2 soft_body, buildable now; high failure tolerance and high tactile value make it the safest first pilot. Demand is inferred-weak — validate volume/changeover pain.
Strongest inferred demand and a core operation, but multi-component variable assembly pushes beyond single-step Phase-2; promising stretch wedge to scope after UC1.
