LSG Sky Chefs

LSG Sky Chefs is one of the world's largest airline catering and onboard hospitality companies, originally founded by American Airlines (Sky Chefs, 1942) and Lufthansa (LSG, 1966) and operating under the combined brand since 1993. It produces complete in-flight catering programs spanning premium onboard dining, full-tray economy menus, snacks, meal boxes and train catering, and also runs lounge catering, last-mile logistics and equipment-handling services. Following Lufthansa's 2023 divestment, its international business (North America, Latin America, Asia-Pacific) is owned by private-equity firm Aurelius Group, while the European operations were acquired by gategroup; the international entity delivers roughly 308 million meals a year across about 131 locations, with North American HQ in Irving, Texas and group HQ in Neu-Isenburg, Germany. Operationally it is an extremely high-mix, high-variability food production business: meals are cooked, blast-chilled, plated to a 'master plate' spec, assembled into tray sets and loaded under tight cold-chain, food-safety (HACCP/FSSC 22000) and last-minute demand constraints. Management has publicly acknowledged that mass automation is difficult because of the sheer variety of service concepts and the amount of hand work involved, though it has begun introducing point automation in its kitchens.
